You already know this. You have always known it.

You are ten years old, sitting in a classroom, watching the clock above the chalkboard. The second hand drags. Every tick seems to take two or three seconds. You glance at the window, then back at the clock. The minute hand hasn't moved. The teacher is talking about fractions. You are pretty sure you have been sitting here for a week. When the bell finally rings, you burst into the hallway like a prisoner set free, and within twenty minutes of play the whole afternoon has vanished.

That same week, your father drives you to the mountains. The road twists through a forest. You are laughing, pointing at deer, eating potato chips. The three-hour drive takes no time at all. When your father says, "We're here," you look at the clock and don't believe it.

Everyone knows these two experiences. Time crawls when we are bored. Time flies when we are absorbed. This is not a curiosity or a trick of memory. It is a fact about how human consciousness works, and it has been a fact for as long as we have had clocks to compare against our inner sense of duration.1

But these ordinary cases are mild. What happens when the stakes rise? A car runs a red light and barrels toward you. In that half-second before impact, time slows to a crawl. You see the other driver's face. You see the bumper. You feel your hands grip the wheel. The whole thing takes maybe two seconds by the clock, but you could describe it for five minutes. Accident survivors have reported this for centuries, and researchers have now confirmed it: under extreme stress, the brain seems to enter a different gear, and subjective time pulls apart from clock time like a rubber band stretching.2

Or picture the opposite. You sit beside a lake at sunset and something in the beauty stops all thought. Minutes pass. When you "come back," you feel as if you were gone for only a heartbeat, though half an hour has slipped away.3

Or think of the athlete. A basketball player in the zone sees the court in slow motion. Every defender moves through syrup. The pass floats. The shot hangs in the air. The buzzer sounds and she looks up: the fourth quarter took ten minutes on the clock but felt like two. Her coach, pacing the sideline and chewing his nails, experienced the same ten minutes as an hour.

Or think of the surgeon. A routine procedure suddenly goes wrong. A blood vessel tears. Everything speeds up and slows down at the same time. The surgeon's hands move fast while her mind seems to step back and watch from a calm distance. Five minutes of crisis surgery later, she'll tell the team it felt like thirty seconds and like a whole afternoon, both at once.

These cases have a name. Psychologists call them "subjective time distortion." But I want to use a plainer phrase: the soul's time is not the clock's time. This chapter is about that gap, what it means, and why it matters for the dying.

Note — The Two Clocks

Everyone lives with two clocks. One is outside you: the ticking seconds on a watch, the sweep of a hospital monitor, the digital readout beside the bed. The other is inside you: the felt pace of your experience, fast or slow, stretched or compressed. Most of the time these two clocks roughly agree. But under the right conditions, they come apart. This chapter asks what happens when they come apart all the way, as they seem to do in the dying.

Augustine and the Time of the Soul

The gap between inner time and outer time is not a modern discovery. Philosophers have been puzzling over it for at least sixteen centuries.

Augustine of Hippo wrestled with time in Book XI of his Confessions, written around 397 AD. His famous opening still echoes: "What then is time? If no one asks me, I know; if I wish to explain it to one who asks, I do not know."4 Augustine realized that the past no longer exists and the future does not yet exist. Only the present is real. But the present has no duration; it is a knife's edge. So where does our sense of a flowing, extended "now" come from?

His answer was remarkable. Time, Augustine concluded, lives in the soul. The soul holds the past by memoria (memory), attends to the present by attentio (attention), and reaches toward the future by expectatio (expectation). These three acts of the soul are what time actually is, as far as experience goes. We don't simply record time; we create our experience of time from within, by the soul's own activity.5

Why does this matter for the moment of death? Because if time is, at bottom, a function of the soul, then a soul that is losing its connection to the body is losing its connection to the body's clock. Memory, attention, and expectation are still active. But they are no longer anchored to the body's rhythms. Augustine did not draw this conclusion himself, but the logic is there in his work: a soul untethered from the body still has memory, attention, and expectation. It still experiences time. But it may experience time very differently.

Notice what Augustine's analysis does not say. It does not say that time is an illusion. It does not say that the soul invents time out of nothing. It says that time, as we experience it, is the soul's activity of holding past, present, and future together. The soul is the loom on which the fabric of experienced time is woven. Take away the body's constraints and the loom keeps running, but the pattern changes. The fabric may be wider, richer, slower. The soul's time is its own.43

Sixteen centuries after Augustine, we still haven't improved on his central insight. We've given it new names and new data. But the insight is the same: the time you live in is not just the time the clock counts. It is the time your soul makes, moment by moment, out of memory and attention and hope.

Bergson: Duration and the Deeper Flow

In 1889, the French philosopher Henri Bergson published Time and Free Will and drew a distinction that changed the conversation about time for the next century.6

Bergson argued that there are two kinds of time. The first he called temps: clock time, spatialized time, time spread out like a measuring tape so that each second sits next to the last like beads on a string. This is the time of science and schedules. It is useful, but it is an abstraction. We invented it by laying time out on a number line, just as we lay space out on a map.

The second he called durée: duration. Duration is the lived flow of consciousness. It is not a string of beads. It is a melody. Each note in a melody is not separate from the ones before and after it; each note carries the memory of the last and the expectation of the next. A melody is a single flowing whole, not a stack of pieces. That, said Bergson, is what real time feels like from the inside.7

The difference matters. Clock time is uniform. Every second is the same length. But duration is not uniform. A moment of joy may have a different quality, a different density, a different inner "length" than a moment of boredom. Duration is qualitative, not quantitative. It is felt, not measured. And it is the real thing. Clock time is the shadow we cast on a wall; duration is the living body that casts the shadow.

Bergson's analysis explains why a three-hour drive feels like twenty minutes and a one-hour lecture feels like a week. Clock time says both lasted what they lasted. Duration says the drive was thin and quick while the lecture was thick and slow. Both are true, in different senses. But duration is the one you actually lived through.

There is something else in Bergson worth noticing. He argued that our practical lives force us to ignore duration and pay attention only to clock time. We have to catch the bus. We have to clock in at work. We have to take the medication at eight and at noon. Life pushes us to treat time as a set of equal units, like coins, interchangeable and countable. But this practical treatment hides the truth. In rare moments of artistic absorption, deep contemplation, or overwhelming emotion, the practical filter drops away and we experience time as it actually is: flowing, qualitative, alive. The artist and the mystic touch duration; the commuter watches the clock.44

Now apply this to the dying. Boros, writing decades later, saw the connection clearly: in death the soul enters into "full possession" of its own experience. The practical concerns that normally compress our awareness fall away. What Bergson called durée is no longer filtered through the body's need to act in the world.8 If Bergson is right that duration is the deeper reality, then the dying soul's experience of extended time is not an illusion. It is the deeper reality, surfacing at last.

William James and the Specious Present

In 1890, the American philosopher and psychologist William James published The Principles of Psychology, a massive two-volume work that remains a landmark in the study of the mind. In it, James tackled the question of how we experience the present moment.9

James pointed out what Augustine had noticed: the mathematical present has no duration. It is a point, a dimensionless instant. But the present we actually experience is not a point. It has a small but real width. James borrowed a phrase from the psychologist E. R. Clay and called this the "specious present." The word "specious" here doesn't mean fake. It means that the experienced present is broader than the strict logical present. It has a short trailing edge (what just happened) and a short leading edge (what is about to happen), and the whole thing feels like a single "now."10

The specious present is typically a few seconds wide. But James noted that it varies. Under conditions of high attention, strong emotion, or intense focus, the specious present seems to expand. The "now" gets wider. More content fits inside a single moment of awareness.

James also observed something subtler. He noted that the felt length of a period of time depends on how you measure it. A week packed with new experiences feels long while you are living it, because each new experience creates a distinct moment, and the mind counts the moments. But looking back, that same busy week feels short, because the memories blend. A dull week works the opposite way: it drags while you live it, because each empty moment is painfully noticeable, but in memory it shrinks to nothing, because there is nothing to remember.45

The NDE turns this pattern inside out. NDErs report that their experience felt long both while they were living it and when they remembered it. It was packed with content. Every moment was distinct, vivid, and emotionally dense. The specious present widened, and the wider present was filled with more experience per moment than ordinary life ever holds.

James did not write about dying. But his principle opens a door. If the specious present can stretch under ordinary pressure, what happens under the ultimate pressure of death? If a car crash can stretch a half-second into a small eternity, what can the dying process do to the experienced "now"? The specious present may widen until the soul's moment holds far more than any clock can count.

The Evidence from Psychology

Philosophy laid the groundwork. Modern psychology has filled in the details. The gap between inner time and outer time is now one of the most thoroughly documented facts in cognitive science. It shows up in condition after condition.

Extreme stress. In 2007, the neuroscientist David Eagleman dropped volunteers from a 150-foot platform (with a safety net) and measured their time-perception during the fall. They consistently overestimated how long the fall lasted. Two seconds of falling felt like four or five. Their inner clock ran faster than the outer clock.11 Accident survivors report the same thing: the seconds before impact stretch, slow, and fill with detail.

Deep meditation. Long-term meditators report that during deep sitting, time can seem to vanish or to slow dramatically. Adept Buddhist monks describe states in which "there is no time" or in which "hours pass like minutes." Research by Amishi Jha and others has confirmed that sustained meditation alters temporal processing in the brain, shifting the felt pace of experience.12

Pain. Acute pain stretches time. Studies on pain perception consistently show that subjects experiencing intense discomfort overestimate the duration of the experience. A thirty-second painful stimulus is reported as lasting a minute or more. The inner clock runs slow; every second drags.13

Joy and absorption. The opposite also holds. Intense joy and deep absorption compress time. Athletes in a "flow state" report losing track of hours. Musicians playing in the zone say a two-hour concert felt like fifteen minutes. The psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi studied flow for decades and found that the compression of time was one of its most reliable features.14

Psychedelic states. Research by Marc Wittmann and others has shown that psychedelic substances can radically alter time-perception. Subjects under psilocybin or LSD report minutes lasting for what feels like hours, or hours passing in what seems like seconds. The direction of distortion varies, but the magnitude can be extreme.15

Fever and illness. High fevers stretch time. People in the grip of a high fever often report that the night lasted forever. The clock says six hours; the experience says twenty. Severe illness alters temporal processing in ways that are well documented but still poorly understood.

Grief and trauma. People in acute grief sometimes report that the hours after learning of a death "lasted days." Trauma survivors describe flashbacks in which a brief, violent event replays in extended slow motion, far longer than the original event took. The body holds the event at a different speed than the clock held it.46

Near-sleep states. The moments just before falling asleep, called hypnagogic states, can produce vivid imagery that feels much longer than the seconds it occupies. Similarly, the moment of waking from a dream can compress a long narrative into a few seconds. The boundary between sleeping and waking, like the boundary between living and dying, is a place where inner time and outer time drift apart.

All of these cases point in the same direction. The inner clock is real, and it regularly disagrees with the outer clock. The disagreement is not random; it follows patterns. Stress, pain, and heightened awareness tend to slow inner time. Joy, absorption, and flow tend to speed it up. But in both directions, the fact is the same: subjective time and objective time are different things, and they can come apart.

Key Argument — Two Kinds of Time

The distinction between subjective time and objective time is not a fringe idea. It is one of the best-supported findings in the psychology of consciousness. From Augustine to Bergson to modern neuroscience, the evidence converges: the time of the soul is not the time of the clock. What differs among the cases is the degree. Boredom stretches time mildly. Stress stretches it moderately. The near-death experience stretches it radically. The moment-of-death encounter this book describes is the extreme case of a well-documented phenomenon.

NDEs: The Extreme Case

If everyday experience shows that inner time and outer time can come apart, near-death experiences show that they can come apart completely.

The temporal anomalies in NDE reports are striking, consistent, and well documented. Chapter 10 treated these in detail. Here the point is to place them on the continuum we have been tracing.

Howard Storm, a university art professor who experienced a profound NDE in 1985 during a medical crisis in Paris, reported that his experience lasted what felt like hours. He described extended conversations, a life review of enormous emotional depth, and a prolonged encounter with beings of light. The clinical interval was minutes.16

Pam Reynolds, who underwent a standstill surgical procedure in 1991 with her brain electrically flat and her blood drained from her head, reported a rich, detailed, sequential experience during the period of clinical death. Her account includes veridical details of the operating room that have been confirmed by her surgical team. The experience she described would take many minutes to live through. The clinical window was seconds to minutes.17

Bruce Greyson, the dean of academic NDE research, has noted that the alteration of time-perception is one of the most consistent features of the NDE. In his Greyson Scale, which scores the depth of near-death experiences, the time-distortion element appears as a regular component. NDErs almost universally report that "time felt different," and many report that it stopped altogether or became meaningless.18

The life-review element is the most dramatic illustration. Many NDErs report reliving every moment of their lives, including the emotional impact of their actions on other people. The Dutch cardiologist Pim van Lommel has documented cases in which patients reported experiencing an entire lifetime of memories in what was clinically a few seconds of cardiac arrest.19 Jeffrey Long's database at the Near Death Experience Research Foundation includes hundreds of cases in which NDErs describe the life review as lasting "an eternity" or "a very long time," though the clinical window was minutes at most.20

What makes the NDE temporal anomalies different from everyday time-distortion is not the kind of phenomenon but the degree. A car crash stretches two seconds into ten. An NDE stretches a few minutes into what feels like hours, days, or longer. The continuum runs from the bored child in the classroom to the accident victim to the meditator to the NDEr, and the direction is the same throughout: under certain conditions, inner time dilates far beyond what the clock records.

But there is a second difference. In ordinary time-distortion, the experience happens in a body that is alive and functioning. In NDEs, the experience happens in a body that is clinically dying or dead. The brain is shutting down, or in cases like Pam Reynolds's, is electrically silent. The body's clock is stopping. And yet the inner clock runs on, and runs long.

That combination is what matters for this book's thesis. If the inner clock can run without the outer clock, then the moment of death is not the brief, blank transition it looks like from the bedside. From the inside, it may be the longest moment of the dying person's life.

And notice the direction of the evidence. In every documented case, the NDE time-distortion runs one way: expansion. NDErs do not report that their experience felt shorter than it was. They report that it felt longer. Sometimes much longer. This is consistent across cultures, across religions, across age groups, and across the medical conditions that triggered the NDE. The consistency is itself a datum. If the dying brain were producing random hallucinations, we would expect the temporal reports to scatter. They don't. They cluster around expansion, consistently and strongly.47

Is It Real? Three Grounds for Saying Yes

Here is the hard question. When an NDEr reports that the experience "lasted hours," is that report trustworthy? Or is the time-extension an illusion, a trick of a dying brain producing compressed memories that only seem long when recalled?

This is not a question we can dodge. If the subjective time-extension is an illusion, then the moment-of-death encounter has no room to unfold. There would be no space for pursuit, conversation, life review, or decision. The thesis of this book stands or falls on whether the dying soul's experience of extended time is real.

I believe it is real, and I want to give three grounds for that belief.

First Ground: The Phenomenological Evidence

NDErs do not report having a brief flash of compressed information that they later expanded into a narrative. They report living through an extended experience. There is a difference.

When you recall a dream, you can usually tell that the dream was patchy, fragmented, and nonlinear. A "long" dream often turns out to be a few disconnected images that your waking mind stitched into a story. But NDErs do not describe their experience that way. They describe sequential events: first this, then that, then this. They describe conversations with turns taken. They describe the life review as unfolding moment by moment, with the emotional content of each scene fully experienced in real time, not replayed at fast-forward. The phenomenology is not that of compressed memory. It is that of lived duration.21

Many NDErs have been asked directly: "Did it feel like a compressed memory, or did it feel like you were really living through it?" The answer, consistently, is the second. "It was more real than anything I've ever experienced," they say. The reality claim extends to the time-claim. The hours felt like hours, not like seconds that later seemed like hours.22

This matters because we have good tools for distinguishing genuine temporal experience from retrospective reconstruction. Think about the difference between watching a movie and remembering one. When you watch a movie, you experience each scene as it comes. You don't know what happens next. You react to surprises. When you remember a movie, you know the whole plot at once. The experience of watching has a flow, a present-tense quality, that the memory of watching lacks. NDErs consistently describe the first quality, not the second. They were there. They lived through it. The time was real to them while it was happening, not just in the retelling.50

Second Ground: The Veridical Anchor

Chapter 8 argued that veridical NDEs provide strong evidence for substance dualism. Some NDErs, during the period of clinical death, accurately perceived events in the physical world that they could not have perceived by any normal means. Pam Reynolds described the bone saw used on her skull. The details matched. Maria, a migrant worker who had a cardiac arrest in a Seattle hospital, described a tennis shoe on a high window ledge outside the building. The shoe was there.23

This is where the veridical evidence does double duty. If the NDE is not a hallucination, if it involves genuine perception of the physical world, then we have good reason to trust the NDEr's reports about other aspects of the experience as well, including its duration. We cannot verify the duration directly, because we don't have an independent clock running inside the dying brain. But we can say this: if the NDEr's perceptions are reliable when they can be checked (the bone saw, the tennis shoe), then we have less reason to dismiss them when they cannot be checked (the felt length of the experience).24

Third Ground: The Theological Anchor

If God is genuinely temporal, as Chapter 13 argued and Appendix F develops, then the encounter at the moment of death takes place in real time on God's side as well as the soul's. God pursues. He listens. He speaks. He waits. He concludes. These are temporal verbs, and they describe real actions in real succession.

The theological ground adds something the phenomenological and veridical grounds cannot. It offers a reason why the dying soul's experience of extended time might be real and not just a subjective impression. The reason is that God is meeting the soul in that moment. God is acting in time. The encounter has duration because God's actions have duration. The soul experiences extended time because something genuinely extended is happening to it.25

This is not a proof. It is a convergence. The phenomenological evidence says the experience feels extended. The veridical evidence gives us reason to trust the reports. The theological ground offers an explanation for why the extension is real. Together, the three grounds form a case that is not logically airtight but is strong enough to carry the argument.

I want to be clear about what kind of argument this is. I am not claiming certainty. I am claiming that the best available evidence, from three independent directions, points the same way. When phenomenology, empirical evidence, and theology converge, the convergence deserves to be taken seriously, even if none of the three alone would be conclusive. This is how most of our knowledge of the unseen world works. We follow the lines where they lead, and when they lead to the same place from different starting points, we have reason to trust the destination.48

A Working Model: The Soul Released from the Brain's Clock

What is actually happening when the dying soul experiences extended time? I want to offer a model. It is a working model, not a dogma. It may be wrong in its details. But it gives the reader a picture to think with.

Start with what we know. During ordinary embodied life, the soul and the body are united. The soul experiences time through the body's nervous system, especially through the basal ganglia, cerebellum, and prefrontal cortex, which are all involved in temporal processing.26 The body's clock constrains the soul's clock. The two run roughly together. This is why your inner time and outer time usually agree. The body anchors the soul to clock time.

Now picture what happens as death approaches. The body's systems are failing. The brain is losing oxygen. The neural circuits that mediate temporal processing are shutting down. The body's clock is slowing and stopping.

On the physicalist view, this is the end of the story. No brain, no consciousness, no experience, no time. But on the substance-dualist view that this book affirms (see Chapter 8), the soul is not identical with the brain. The soul uses the brain the way a musician uses an instrument. When the instrument breaks, the musician does not cease to exist. The music changes, because the instrument's constraints are gone. But the musician is still there.27

In this model, the dying soul does not lose consciousness when the brain shuts down. It loses the brain's constraints on consciousness. One of those constraints is the body's clock. The body kept the soul's experience of time tethered to the pace of neural firing, heartbeat, and circadian rhythm. As the body dies, that tether loosens. The soul begins to experience time in its native mode, unfiltered by the body. And in its native mode, time works differently. A moment can hold what an hour held before.

Insight — The Brain as Filter, Not Producer

If the brain produces consciousness, then a dying brain produces dying consciousness, and finally no consciousness at all. But if the brain filters consciousness, constraining and shaping a soul that exists independently, then a dying brain is a filter coming off. The consciousness does not fade. It opens. The time-constraint lifts, and the soul enters a wider temporal experience. This is not mysticism dressed in science. It is one of the two live options in the philosophy of mind, and it is the one the NDE data support.

I want to be honest about what this model does and does not accomplish. It gives us a coherent picture. It explains why NDErs report extended experiences during brief clinical windows. It fits the substance-dualist framework that the veridical NDE evidence already supports. It coheres with Augustine's insight that time is in the soul and with Bergson's insight that duration is the deeper reality.

But it does not give us a mechanism we can test in a laboratory. We cannot measure the soul's native temporal mode from outside. We cannot hook an oscilloscope to the immaterial. The model is a philosophical proposal, grounded in converging evidence but not experimentally confirmed. I think it is the best explanation available. But I hold it with open hands, and I think the reader should too.28

Two other models deserve mention, though neither replaces the first. One says the encounter takes place in God's own time, and the soul is drawn into that wider temporal experience by God's initiative. The other says the dying moment opens a different "register" of time, neither ordinary clock time nor the soul's native time, but something more like what the Bible calls kairos, the decisive, saving moment. These models are not rivals; they are different angles on the same reality. Chapter 15 will develop the biblical side. For now, the key point is that all three models agree: the dying moment holds more than the clock can measure.29

A Philosophical Note: A-Theory and the Reality of the Present

I want to touch briefly on one philosophical question that matters for the model, without developing it fully here. The fuller treatment belongs to Appendix H.

Philosophers of time divide into two broad camps. The A-theorists say that tense is real: the present moment is objectively "now," the past is gone, and the future is not yet. Time flows. The B-theorists say that tense is an illusion: past, present, and future all exist equally, spread out in a static "block universe," and the feeling that "now" is special is just a feature of our perspective, not a feature of reality.30

This book is committed to the A-theory, and the commitment matters. On the A-theory, the dying soul's experience of living through an extended sequence is real in the strongest possible sense: it is the soul's genuine present, unfolding moment by moment, each moment coming into being and passing away. The encounter is happening.

The philosopher William Lane Craig has argued that our experience of tense is a "properly basic belief," trustworthy unless defeated by compelling evidence to the contrary.31 I think Craig is right, and I think his point applies directly to the NDE reports. When an NDEr says, "I lived through this, one moment at a time, and it was more real than anything in my life," that report has the same epistemic standing as your report right now that you are reading this sentence in the present. It is a basic temporal experience. It is innocent until proven guilty.

On the B-theory, the thesis can still be salvaged, but it loses something. If time is a block, then the dying soul's "extended experience" is a tenseless event of a certain magnitude, embedded in the block alongside everything else. It is real in the sense that it exists. But it is not real in the sense that the soul is living through it, because on the B-theory nobody is living through anything. There is no flow. The encounter is just there, the way a painting is there. This book's thesis is stronger on A-theory ground, where the encounter genuinely unfolds.32

Some readers will wonder whether Einstein's theory of relativity forces us to accept the B-theory. It does not, and Appendix N gives the full reply. The short answer is that physics tells us what clocks measure under various conditions. It does not tell us whether tense is metaphysically real. The dying soul's experience of extended time does not require any particular cosmology. It requires only that the soul's time is not the clock's time, and that is exactly what every line of evidence in this chapter has confirmed.

Boros on the Temporality of Death

The Catholic theologian Ladislaus Boros, whose work we will examine closely in Chapter 16, wrestled with exactly this question of time at the moment of death. His engagement is worth pausing over, because he saw the problem clearly and offered a solution that anticipates much of what we have been saying.

Boros faced an objection: "For the taking of a decision a certain interval of time is required. But, between 'before death' and 'after death' there is no intervening space of time. The transition must be thought of as a break that has nothing to do with time."33 If death is instantaneous and indivisible, there is no room for a decision.

His reply was careful. He agreed that the transition of death is, in one sense, non-temporal: it has no extension on the clock. But he argued that "the passing and what occurs in the passing are temporal." The last moment before death and the first moment after it merge. The transition is a line with no width on the clock, but it is a moment of enormous depth for the soul.34

Primary Source — Boros on the Soul's Full Awakening

The hidden dynamism of existence by which a man has lived until then — though without his ever having been able to exploit it in its fullest measure — is now brought to completion, freely and consciously. What Boros describes is a moment that looks like nothing from outside but is everything from inside. The soul is "suddenly awake, in full knowledge and liberty." The dynamism of a whole life reaches completion. This is not the language of a blank, instantaneous transition. It is the language of a wide, deep, temporally rich event happening within a clinical sliver of time.

Boros drew heavily on Bergson. He noted that for Bergson, "our existence is completely open to its own past. Our life consists of an uninterrupted duration. It is a single sentence, begun on the first day of our consciousness, and nowhere divided up by full stops." Everything we have felt, thought, and willed from earliest childhood "carries on into the present, pushing against the gate of consciousness."35 In death, that gate opens. The whole of a life that had been held behind the gate of practical attention floods into awareness. This is what the NDE life review is. The data Boros did not have, because NDE research barely existed when he wrote, now confirm the picture he drew from philosophy alone.

The convergence between Boros and the NDE data is one of the most striking features of this book's argument. Boros predicted, on philosophical and theological grounds, that the moment of death would involve a total awakening of consciousness. NDE research, decades later, documented that very awakening. Boros predicted that the dying soul would enter "full knowledge." NDErs report knowing everything about their lives, seeing every deed and its consequences, in a moment of overwhelming clarity. Boros predicted that the soul would be "suddenly awake." NDErs describe their experiences as more vivid than any moment of waking life.52

If Boros was right about the awakening, and the NDE data confirm the awakening, then he may well be right about the time. The moment of death is a moment of extraordinary depth. It is not measured by the clock. It is measured by the soul.

The Dying-Brain Objection

I need to face the strongest objection to everything I have argued in this chapter. It goes like this.

"The dying brain is flooded with neurotransmitters, deprived of oxygen, and undergoing rapid neural collapse. These conditions produce hallucinations. The NDE, including its temporal anomalies, is a product of the dying brain. The extended time is an illusion produced by abnormal neural activity, just as a dream can seem long but occupies only a few minutes of REM sleep. There is no soul experiencing extended time. There is only a brain in its final spasm."36

This objection is serious and it deserves a serious reply. I don't think it works, and here is why.

Common Objection — "It's Just the Dying Brain"

Objection: NDE temporal anomalies are produced by the dying brain's abnormal chemistry, not by a soul experiencing real extended time. They are hallucinations, like fever dreams or drug trips.

Reply: The dying-brain hypothesis faces three problems. First, it cannot account for veridical NDEs, in which the dying patient accurately perceives events they could not have witnessed by any normal means (see Chapter 8). If the brain is producing hallucinations, how does it produce accurate perceptions of operating-room events while clinically dead? Second, the dying-brain hypothesis predicts that NDEs should vary wildly depending on the cause of death, the drugs in the system, and the specific pattern of neural collapse. But NDEs are strikingly consistent across cultures, causes of death, and clinical conditions. Third, the dying-brain hypothesis predicts chaotic, fragmentary experiences, like delirium. But NDEs are coherent, structured, and reported as "more real than real." Hallucinations feel like hallucinations. NDEs, by the testimony of those who have had them, do not.

The dying-brain hypothesis also has a specific problem with time-extension. If the time-dilation in NDEs is a product of abnormal neural activity, then it is a perception without a real object. But perceptions without real objects are hallucinations, and hallucinations are typically chaotic and contentless. The NDE time-extension is neither. It is filled with structured, meaningful, sequential content: conversations, life reviews, encounters. It is more like waking experience than like any known form of hallucination.37

Eagleman's research is sometimes cited in support of the dying-brain view. His free-fall experiments showed that stress does not actually speed up the brain's frame rate. Instead, the brain forms richer memories during high-stress events, and the richness of the memory makes the event seem longer in retrospect. But even Eagleman's own findings cut both ways. If the brain can form exceptionally rich memories under extreme conditions, the question is what is producing the extreme richness of the NDE memory. Eagleman's mechanism might explain the content, but it does not explain the veridical perception. And it does not address the NDEr's consistent claim that the experience was not a memory at all but a lived event.38

I am not saying the dying-brain hypothesis is absurd. I am saying that when weighed against the veridical evidence, the cross-cultural consistency, the phenomenological depth, and the NDErs' own testimony, it is the weaker of the two options on the table. The stronger option is that the soul really does experience extended time at the moment of death, and the NDE reports are telling us the truth about what dying is like from the inside.

There is one more thing worth saying about the dying-brain view. Even if we grant, for argument's sake, that the brain produces some of the temporal distortion, this does not rule out the soul's contribution. Substance dualism does not deny that the brain and the soul interact. It says they are distinct. If the dying brain's final burst of activity triggers a genuine loosening of the soul from its bodily anchor, then the brain's chemistry is not the cause of the extended experience. It is the trigger. The cause is the soul itself, entering a wider temporal mode as its instrument fails. The dying-brain objection may describe the mechanism by which the soul is released, not an alternative to the soul's release.49

What Measurement Can and Cannot Tell Us

A skeptic will press further: "You say the dying soul experiences extended time. Can you measure it?"

The honest answer is no. Not from outside. We do not have access to the soul's inner clock from a third-person perspective. We cannot place a sensor in the immaterial. What we have is first-person testimony from those who came back, converging philosophical arguments, and a theological framework that makes sense of the data. The evidence is convergent, not directly empirical.39

But this should not trouble us as much as it might seem. Most of the things we care about most in life are not directly measurable from outside. We do not measure love with a voltmeter. We do not weigh hope on a scale. We do not clock the duration of a prayer. The fact that the soul's time is not observable from outside does not mean it is not real. It means it belongs to the category of things known from within, not the category of things measured from without.40

What we can do is listen. NDErs tell us what their experience was like from inside. Philosophers tell us that the distinction between inner time and outer time is well grounded. Psychologists tell us that subjective time-distortion is real and documented. Theologians tell us that God acts in time and that the encounter at death is a genuine temporal event. The convergence is strong enough to bear the weight of the thesis.

And there is one more thing to say. Sam Parnia, the lead researcher on the AWARE studies, has pointed out that the inability to measure something from outside does not mean it is unreal. It means our instruments are limited. We cannot measure love, consciousness, or moral conviction with laboratory equipment. We do not conclude that they are unreal. We conclude that they belong to a dimension of reality that our instruments cannot reach. The dying soul's time may belong to the same dimension.51

What the Extension Makes Room For

Why does any of this matter? Because if subjective time-extension at the moment of death is real, it changes everything about what the dying moment can contain.

Without time-extension, the moment of death is a flash. There is no room for Christ to pursue a soul, for the soul to resist, for Christ to persist, for the soul to reconsider, for a life review to unfold, for the soul to see itself truly, for the soul to decide. A flash can hold a gasp. It cannot hold a conversation.41

With time-extension, the moment of death opens. What looks like seconds from the bedside may be experienced as hours, days, or longer from inside. There is room for pursuit. There is room for a life review in which the soul sees every choice, every hurt, every kindness, every missed turn. There is room for Christ to stand before the soul and say, I have loved you before you knew my name. There is room for the soul to argue, to weep, to resist, to surrender. There is room for a genuine decision, made in full awareness, with nothing hidden and nothing forced.

This is the whole architecture of the moment-of-death encounter as this book describes it. The time-extension is not a side issue. It is the platform on which the encounter stands. Without it, the thesis collapses. With it, the thesis becomes not just possible but natural.42

Consider the alternative. If there is no time-extension, then the moment-of-death encounter must be compressed into a fraction of a second. In that fraction, Christ must reveal himself, present the gospel, conduct a life review, engage in pursuit and persuasion, and allow the soul to make a free and informed decision. That is too much for a fraction of a second. But it is not too much for an afternoon. And the evidence we have surveyed in this chapter says the dying soul may have an afternoon or more.

The dynamics of the encounter, including the life review, the pursuit, and the decision, belong to the chapters ahead. Chapter 16 will develop Boros's full account. Chapter 19 will build the phase model. For now, the point is simpler: the moment has room. The clock's seconds are not the soul's seconds. And the gap between them is where grace does its work.

From the Bedside

Let me close where the dying actually are.

You are standing beside the bed. Your mother is dying. The monitors are slowing. Her breathing is shallow. You hold her hand and feel the pulse grow faint.

From where you stand, she is slipping away. The room is quiet. A nurse adjusts an IV line. The clock on the wall ticks. In a minute, maybe two, the monitors will go flat. You will stand there in the silence and wonder what happened in that last moment.

Everything I have argued in this chapter says: more happened than you saw.

Inside that dying, behind the closed eyes and the failing breath, the soul's clock is running on a different scale. The moment you saw as a minute may have been, for her, a long afternoon. In that afternoon, she was met. She was shown her life. She was spoken to. She was offered love beyond anything she had imagined. And she responded.

You could not see it from the bedside. The monitors cannot display it. But the philosophers, the psychologists, the NDErs, and the theologians all point the same way: the moment of death is wider on the inside than it is on the outside. The soul has time. And Someone is using that time.

I don't know how long, exactly. Nobody does. The NDE reports suggest hours, sometimes what feels like days. Whether the dying soul's encounter with Christ takes the equivalent of an afternoon or a week or a month, I cannot say. What I can say is that the moment holds more than the clock can measure. That is enough. That is enough for a pursuit, a conversation, a seeing, and a choice. That is enough for the encounter this book describes.

Insight — The Punchline

From the bedside, the dying loved one slips away in moments. Inside that dying, the soul has all the time it needs to meet Christ. The clock measures one thing. The soul lives another. And the gap between them is the space where the encounter unfolds.

The next chapter will turn to the Bible and ask what Scripture says about this kind of time. It will introduce the distinction between chronos and kairos, between the time of the clock and the time of the saving moment, and show that the biblical theology of time has been pointing toward this conclusion for millennia.

But for now, hold the image. Your mother's last breath. The silent room. And inside that silence, a meeting that has all the time in the world.
